Pain is an important message, it tells us to rest and ice and take time to allow for healing. But if the injury does not heal completely, then the pain continues, becoming itself a medical problem. By definition, when that pain lasts longer than 3 months, then we are dealing with Chronic Pain that impacts our mood, function, health and quality of life. How we address it are in multiple ways.
Our approach begins with defining the causes of the Chronic Pain. It may have begun with an injury or illness to a joint, muscle or nerve. There may have been subsequent surgeries. Eventually, there can be further instability and weakness, over the course of time.
The Goals of our Plan is to decrease the pain, swelling, spasms, weakness and instability, then to eventually lead to improved motion and function.
We will design a medication program aimed controlling pain, spasms, nerve function, and brain-coping skills. We follow the CDC Guidelines, as well as provide transitioning to safer medications.
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) involves palpation and manipulation of bones, muscles , joints and fasciae. It is said to be a softer form of manipulation, compared to Chiropractic. Osteopathic manipulation provides pain management in all ages, but it is extremely beneficial for older individuals to improve balance and strength, and reduce risk of falls. Osteopathy is covered by Medicare.

Acupuncture, and its newer offering Electro-acupuncture, can provide relief of pain, as well as aid in flare-ups. Traditional Chinese Medicine explains acupuncture as inserting thin needles in key points that balance the flow of energy or life force. Western practitioners view the acupuncture as stimulating nerves and muscles and boosting your body's natural painkillers. Beginning in 2020, Medicare provides coverage for Acupuncture in Pain Management clinics like ours.
Low-intensity Shockwave Therapy is an example of some of the newer Physical Therapy modalities to treat joint, fascia, muscular, and ligamentous injuries. More than just pain management, shockwave therapy is believed to cause physiologic and vascular changes that provides an environment for healing.
As a foundation, a program of Conditioning and Strengthening Exercises to manage Chronic Pain and improve function. The program is aimed at strengthening your core muscles and muscles around any injured joint. A combination of isometric and isotonic exercises, machine-assisted, provide for joint protection.
A complete hormonal evaluation is done, including Testosterone, Growth Hormone, and Thyroid. Testosterone is just one of the many Hormonal Replacement Therapy, aimed at reducing fatigue, depression, weakness, and obesity.
Chronic Pain impacts our mood and sleep, and is often associated with depression and anxiety. Counseling, Medications, and Ketamine have been found to useful in dealing with Chronic Pain.
